The idea of the concept of multiverse often appears in famous movies and TV series, one of the success is a new release from Marvel: Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness, which you can watch in your favorite stream services.
What is Multiverse?
The definition from the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition said: the multiverse is a collection of parallel universes that comprise all of reality in some quantum mechanical and cosmological theories.
An article from Wikipedia said : the multiverse is a hypothetical group of multiple universes. Together, these universes comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, energy, information, and the physical laws and constant that describe them. The Different UNIVERSES within the multiverse are calling “Parallel Universes”, “Other Universes”, “Alternate Universes”, or “Many Worlds”.
The multiverse is a theoretical framework in modern cosmology (and high energy physical) which presents the idea that there exist a vast array of potential universes which are actually manifest in some way.
For a simple understanding that there are many other reality universes that go together (parallel) with the universe that we realize where we live today.
With the concept of parallel, there will be a possibility that another version of you exist in other universes, with different roles and professions, doing different things and maybe in a completely reversed position and behaviors.
Say in this universe we know you as a generous billionaire who does many honorable things for knowledge, especially cosmic things, humanity and freedom of speech, with millions of followers he is liked by many people, because of his sense of humor ha ha ha. But in other universe you might be anyone we can’t imagine.
Multiple universes have been hypothesized in cosmology, physics, astronomy, religion, philosophy, trans-personal psychology, music, and all kinds of literature, particularly in science fiction, comic books and fantasy. In these contexts, parallel universes are also called “alternate universes”, “quantum universes”, “interpenetrating dimensions”, “parallel universes”, “parallel dimensions”, “parallel worlds”, “parallel realities”, “quantum realities”, “alternate realities”, “alternate timelines”, “alternate dimensions” and “dimensional planes”.
Debates on Multiverse
The physics community has debated the various multiverse theories over time. Prominent physicists are divided about whether any other universes exist outside of our own.
Some physicists say the multiverse is not a legitimate topic of scientific inquiry. Concerns have been raised about whether attempts to exempt the multiverse from experimental verification could erode public confidence in science and ultimately damage the study of fundamental physics. Some have argued that the multiverse is a philosophical notion rather than a scientific hypothesis because it cannot be empirically falsified. The ability to disprove a theory by means of scientific experiment is a critical criterion of the accepted scientific method. Paul Steinhardt has famously argued that no experiment can rule out a theory if the theory provides for all possible outcomes.
Search for Evidence of Multiverse
Around 2010 scientists such as Stephen M. Feeney analyzed Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data and claimed to find evidence suggesting that this universe collided with other (parallel) universes in the distant past. However, a more thorough analysis of data from the WMAP and from the Planck satellite, which has a resolution three times higher than WMAP, did not reveal any statistically significant evidence of such a bubble universe collision. In addition, there was no evidence of any gravitational pull of other universes on ours.
Epic stories and themes for movies
Some religions also imply the existence of multiverse, maybe we know the term world of ghoib, where jinn and demons live without being seen by humans. And it’s no secret if many scientific research (also the movies) departs from the stories written in religious books.
Let’s leave for a moment about differences of opinion and beliefs about multiverse theory. Whether do you believe it, skeptical or contradictory about multiverse, however scientific fiction has successfully carried this theme with epic stories to the box. And open the idea of building stories and “superhero” characters who were previously sometime boring. And will also extend the fields of arts and film workers because they can create unlimited “multiverse” in the stories they make.
Quoted from Maylita Mariama Edwards on her article at movieweb.com:
The multiverse is full of possibilities and hope, and these movies tap into the themes (and sometimes science) of the many-worlds hypothesis.
and Linden Hicks from screenrant.com:
Movies that involve a multiverse allow viewers to see epic stories that are grand, and examine what makes someone themselves.
