The Mysterious Migration of Marine Mammals

Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and seals, undertake seasonal migrations that can cover thousands of miles. The specific routes and distances vary depending on the species and population, but generally, these migrations are driven by the need to find food, mate, and give birth in areas with favorable conditions.

In recent years, there has been a growing concern over the increasing number of marine mammals that have been found stranded on beaches around the world. These events are not only tragic but also pose a significant threat to the survival of various species of whales, dolphins, and seals. And unfortunately, another incident of stranded marine mammals has occurred, this time in Bali.

On Saturday, April 1st, a dead whale was discovered by local residents at Batu Lumbang Beach in Selemadeg District, Tabanan Regency. The whale was allegedly a Bryde Whale, a species of whale that is classified as endangered. The cause of death is unknown, but the whale was already in a state of decay when it was found, indicating that it had been dead for some time before washing up on the shore.

Only a few days later, on Wednesday, April 5th, another stranding incident was reported in Bali. Bali waters are an annual migration route for large marine mammals, including sperm whales. It is no surprise then that this recent stranding event involved a live sperm whale found stranded on Yeh Malet Beach in Banjarangkan District, Klungkung Regency. Although initially, the whale was able to be driven back out to sea with the help of the tide, it was unfortunately stranded again a few hours later. This time, the whale was unable to survive and was found dead on another coast, the border of Klungkung-Karangasem Regency.

The cause of these stranding events is not entirely clear, and scientists believe that it could be due to a combination of factors. One of the leading causes of stranding events is believed to be human activities, such as pollution and noise pollution, which can cause stress and disorientation in these animals. Another factor is the disruption of marine currents and tides caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

There are several factors that can cause whales to strand on the beach, including:

  1. Illness or injury: Sick or injured whales may become disoriented and end up stranded on a beach. They may also be unable to swim or stay afloat, which can cause them to drift onto the shore.

  2. Navigation errors: Whales use echolocation to navigate and communicate, but human-made noise pollution in the marine can interfere with their ability to do so. This can cause them to become disoriented and lose their way, resulting in them stranding on a beach.

  3. Natural disasters: Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes can cause disruptions in the marine’s currents and tides, which can cause whales to become stranded on beaches.

  4. Human activities: Human activities such as naval sonar, oil and gas exploration, fishing, and boat traffic can cause stress and disorientation in whales, leading to stranding.

  5. Parasites: Parasites such as lungworm and liver flukes can infect and weaken whales, making them more susceptible to stranding.

  6. Pod dynamics: Whales are social animals and may follow a sick or injured member of their pod onto the shore. Additionally, if a dominant whale becomes disoriented, the rest of the pod may follow, resulting in a mass stranding event.

It is important to note that stranding events can be complex and may be caused by a combination of factors. Scientists continue to study and monitor these events in order to better understand and prevent them.

However, ocean currents can also play a significant role in the migration patterns of marine mammals. Warm currents, such as the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Marine, or the Kuroshio Current in the Pacific Marine, can bring nutrient-rich waters and food sources to certain areas, attracting large numbers of marine mammals to feed and breed. Similarly, upwelling areas can be important feeding and breeding grounds for many species of whales, dolphins, and seals. Upwelling occurs when winds push warm surface waters away from the coast, causing colder, nutrient-rich waters to rise from deeper depths. This can create areas of high productivity and attract large numbers of fish, squid, and other prey, which in turn attract marine mammals.

The specific migration routes and distances of marine mammals can vary greatly depending on their needs and the conditions of the marine ecosystem. Unfortunately, these events remind us that even these majestic creatures are not immune to the effects of human activities and natural disasters. It is crucial that we continue to study and monitor these events to better understand and prevent them, in order to ensure the survival of these magnificent animals for generations to come.
